CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“No way,” Rebecca said in response to something Kayla was telling her.

“You girls stay in the warm truck,” Polly said to the girls. “I want to go inside the school so the boys know I’m here and waiting for them.”

She and Rebecca had spent a short time at the hospital. Stephanie was still in and out of a drugged sleep. Once Kayla was able to talk to her sister and touch her hand, she did much better. When Jeff and Skylar insisted she go home to get some sleep, she’d been more relieved than Polly expected. This was a lot to deal with, though, and Kayla relied on her friends when things got tough. She would spend the night with Rebecca and go to school tomorrow. Jeff told Polly that he’d pick the girls up after school and take them to the hospital and Skylar would bring them back to Bellingwood.

Kayla had been describing the gruesome details of Stephanie’s injuries and surgery to Rebecca while Polly did her best to avoid listening to the conversation. There were just things she didn’t want to know. Rebecca and Henry loved watching surgeries on television. Polly allowed for Rebecca’s fascination — the girl would sit with her sketch pad, drawing everything she saw. Henry was just twisted as far as Polly was concerned. There was too much blood and gore. It made her sick to her stomach.

Polly stood inside the front door of the elementary school, waiting for Caleb and JaRon. She hoped they had a good day, though she didn’t expect much. The first couple of weeks in a new life were going to be rough for them.

Even with teachers trying to keep their kids in control until they got out to the buses and their rides home, the noise after the final bell rang was fun for Polly. After a day of being good, it had to feel great to let loose and be free. She watched over the heads of the elementary students for the two boys who were hers.

“Miss Polly!” she heard and craned her neck to see who was calling out to her. She waved at the little tow-headed boy who had found his younger brother before looking for her.

Polly waved back at the two boys and waited until they got to her. “Did you have a good day?”

“It was okay,” Caleb said. “I’m going to miss my friends.”

“Yes you will, but when you get into high school, you’ll see them all again.”

His eyes lit up. “I will?”

“Absolutely. And you’ll have a bunch of new friends to introduce to them. How about you, JaRon?”

Little JaRon’s head was covered in long, dark curls. He was going to be a beautiful young man. Right now he was so adorable, she wanted to squeeze him. Their mother was Caucasian, and all Marian Tally knew about their father was that he’d been African American. Both boys had similar facial features and it was obvious they were brothers, though they had different colored skin.
